Leadership That Works for Cary

I have been devoted to taking care of our community and its future for over half of my life.  I have worked hard to build on the successes of our previous leaders and uphold their standards of excellence.

Working in the public sector practice at SAS, I spend every day working with and for governments across the globe.  I think deeply about what works for local governments and I bring the best practices I learn to Cary.

I have always believed that a local leader should be a visionary, an ambassador for her community, and have a resolve to get things done.  And, in this time of political upheaval, it is more important than ever that a local leader be a public servant rather than politician.

I have set a vision for Cary, holding developers and ourselves to the highest standards and striving to make Cary the greatest value for our citizens. My Council colleagues are familiar with me saying, “Wait for great,” as I encourage better land uses and development proposals.

As an ambassador for Cary, I have served on many boards to promote the wellbeing of our community, region, and state and to advance causes that matter to our community:

  • Board member and past chair of the Central Pines Regional Council

  • Board member and past chair of Go Triangle

  • Board member of the Taylor Family YMCA

  • Board member and past chair of the Northwest Cary YMCA

  • Chair of the YMCA We Build People Campaign

  • Board member of the YMCA of the Triangle

  • Co-founder of the Cary Women's Giving Network

  • Founder of the Cary Community Foundation

  • Founding board member of Read and Feed

  • Board member and past president of the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM)

  • Chair of NCLM’s statewide Task Force on Equity

  • Board member and past president of the National Association of Regional Councils

Since I first joined the Council, I have had the resolve to get things done. I knew that our Town would not “stay the same,” so we needed to shape its future growth so that it enhanced our community.  Over the years, I have emphasized a balance between development, business, environment, amenities, and infrastructure.

I’m proud to play an important role as a team builder on our Council. We have fostered an environment that values open-mindedness, differences of opinions, and working toward compromise.  This productive and respectful climate is a welcome change from our state and federal governments.

Our local government is non-partisan for a reason.  While I know that some people would like party politics to creep into Cary’s town hall, I strongly encourage you to vote for a leader who puts Cary first over politics.

"Well Done is Better Than Well Said"

It's been an honor to have a role in making Cary the extraordinary place that it is. Through decades of hands-on leadership, I've developed deep knowledge of the careful balance required to guide growth while preserving our community's character - experience that goes beyond vision to proven results.

I have been instrumental in elements of Cary that many people take for granted:

  • the widening of Highway 55 and Davis Drive

  • Louis Stephens Drive

  • 8’ wide multi-use paths throughout Cary

  • West Regional Library

  • the siting of Carpenter Elementary

  • the 25 parks, 80 miles of greenways, and 2,365 acres of open space that have been added since I joined the Council

  • vibrant shopping and office areas

  • amenity-rich neighborhoods

  • environmental standards such a stream buffers, tree planting and preservation, and stormwater protection

  • countless policies and practices that make Cary an aesthetically pleasing, safe, and easy place to live.

Each of these come with stories and histories that are too much for a website, but I would enjoy sharing with you if you are interested in chatting about them.

To get so much done, it took vision, collaboration with others, and putting politics aside. This has been and will be how I serve our community.
